Shop my Winter Wardobe Essentials for 2024 to refresh your wardrobe.
Winter is often an overlooked season for fashion. Maybe it’s because everyone expects to be hibernating inside, waiting for the colder days to pass. However, it might be my second favorite season to dress for (behind fall).
Over the last few years, I’ve been working to clean out my closet and refine my wardrobe into a classic wardrobe with staples for every season. I’ve fallen in love with this process because it helps me avoid outfit fatigue and look put together no matter the time of year or occasion.
Creating a classic wardrobe has helped me shop more sustainably. I’m no longer chasing trends; instead, I’m building a wardrobe that I’ll love for years (and years) to come.
Winter is creeping up on us here in New York, so whether you need a warm winter coat, the perfect pair of wool trousers, or a stylish set of waterproof boots, this guide will help you create your winter wardrobe. As you scroll through my winter wardrobe essentials, take stock of what you already have, and what needs replacing, and be sure to shop my winter wardrobe essentials for 2024.

My Winter Wardrobe Essentials for 2024
Staple Outerwear
Wool Coat
A wool coat is one of my non-negotiable winter wardrobe essentials.

I’ve had mine from Reiss for years, so I know that it’s a quality investment.
Puffer Coat
An ultra-light puffer coat like this one from Canada Goose is guaranteed to keep you warm even on the coldest of New York days.

Its design locks in the heat, meaning even the cold-biting wind won’t get through.
Depending on where you live, a puffer may or may not be a winter essential, but in New York, this extra bit of warmth is needed!
Trench Coat
Trench coats are one of those unique designs that have never gone out of style.

No matter the generation, people across New York (and London) pull out their trench coats this time of year. Especially for those days when we do get a light burst of warmth (which does happen). The Saskia Trench Coat is perfect for us tall girls and the quality will last you a lifetime.
Leather Jacket
I’ve been raving about this leather jacket for the last couple of years because it’s truly a cold-weather staple.

I love this color from All Saints because it’s a lot less harsh than your typical all-black biker jackets.
Teddy Coat
Lastly, my winter essential guilty pleasure is this statement teddy coat from UGG.

Basically, UGG has designed a gorgeous coat that’s going to feel like you’re being given a giant hug all winter long. For us tall girls, this coat hits at a perfect length.
Staple Knitwear & Tops
Cashmere Sweater
This cashmere sweater is my most worn winter essential.

Besides being extremely soft and comfortable, it’s also lightweight and perfect for layering.
Thermal Top
Base layers are essential for winter.

Speaking of layering, sometimes having a crewneck baselayer to throw on under your sweaters and other pieces is the best way to stay warm on very cold days. It’s warmth without the bulk – perfect for winter.
Turtleneck
There’s a reason this turtleneck from Land’s End is so well-reviewed.

It’s soft, lightweight, and made from materials that you can feel good about. Great for layering all winter long, so if you’ve had a new turtleneck on your wishlist, this is the piece for you.
Cardigan
My favorite cardigan for winter.

Designed for comfort, this cardigan is ideal for days cuddled up at home, or thrown on for a casual day running errands. UGG knows what they’re doing when it comes to designing classic comfort. This cardigan is my absolute favorite.
Staple Pants & Bottoms
Wool Trousers
Wool trousers are a must-have winter essential.

If you don’t already have a pair, I suggest this style from Theory. Everything Theory makes is high-quality, so you know these trousers are going to last for years. These are a classy work pant that you can easily style with any blouse this winter.
Dark Wash Denim
Favorite Daughter makes my favorite jeans of all time and they’re always perfect for us tall girlies.

I love these jeans because the color and wash elevate them beyond typical dark-wash denim. Style these jeans with heels, boots, and any of the outerwear I’ve shared with you today for a classic winter look.
Denim
My favorite pair of denim.

Finding the right pair of jeans is like a superpower, but I think I’ve done it with this pair from Abercrombie. I’ve always loved their jeans – and their Mid Rise 90s Straight Jean is no exception.
Thermal Leggings
And a pair of baselayer bottoms for your trip.

Lastly, because layering is key this winter, make sure you’re prepared with the perfect pair of thermal leggings. Land’s End has designed its thermals with a special fabric to keep you warm and snuggly, even on the coldest of New York days. That’s why this pair of thermal leggings is a must-have winter wardrobe essential.
Staple Footwear
Knee High Boots
Boots are my love language.

They’re the reason I love shopping and dressing in colder weather. Sam Edelman makes quality and stylish shoes, and this pair of Sylvia boots is the best investment I’ve made in a long time.
Ankle Boots
A pointy-toe, sleek-heeled ankle boot has been a classic style for years.

I especially love this pair with its 2 ½ inch heel, making it the perfect boot to run around town in.
Waterproof/Snow Boots
Depending on where you live, a waterproof and warm pair of boots might be a winter wardrobe essential for you.

I know in New York, having these boots in my rotation has saved my feet during slushy, cold days. One this to note about this pair of boots is that they will keep your feet incredibly warm (and dry!)
Loafers
Warm sandal weather is far behind us, but that doesn’t mean it’s all boots every day.

Having a stylish pair of loafers can give you something nice to wear to the office, where you know it’s going to be too warm (and too casual) for snowboots.
Cozy Slippers
My favorite part of the day is the moment when I get home and slip into my cushy, cozy UGG slippers.

If you don’t already have a pair of these, make sure this is your Christmas gift to yourself.
Staple Dresses and Skirts
Sweater Dress
This sweater dress from Ralph Lauren is gorgeous.

For winter, you need to focus on styles that pair well with winter outerwear. That means shopping for quality dresses that aren’t too bulky. Which in turn means you’ll be able to buy coats that fit you – instead of feeling the need to size up for underlayers.
Knit Midi Skirt
Swap out your satin midi skirt of summer for something that’s just as stylish – while being a lot more practical.

This pleated knit skirt will help polish off all of your looks this winter.
Maxi Skirt
Finally, a maxi skirt that actually fits tall girls.

This skirt comes in a collection of colors, but I personally love the burgundy. Burgundy has been the color of this season, and it will look gorgeous with the black pieces you already have.
Staple Accessories
Cashmere Scarf
This will be the softest scarf that you ever owned in your life.

And the quality cashmere material should last you for years and years.
Gloves
I keep these gloves in my purse all winter long.

They’re perfect because you can still use your phone while you’re wearing them which means your hands will actually stay warm.
Fleece-Lined Tights
A few winters ago I finally got my first pair of fleece-lined tights and they have completely transformed my winters since.

Winter in New York can be unbearably cold – these will make an immediate difference.
Hat
This cute beanie is my go-to on the really cold days in the city.

It’s a cute style that I’ve had for years, without it ever going out of fashion.
