Fall is in full swing and it’s by far my favorite season to dress for. It’s also my favorite season in New York, I love the changing leaves, chunky sweaters, and any excuse to wear a cute pair of boots. Today I want to share some fall wardrobe staples that all the New York City fashion girlies will be sporting this year.
These fall wardrobe staples include some of the classics; chunky sweaters, booties, scarves, and a leather jacket – but I’m sharing some unique pieces for 2024 like this wide-brimmed hat and my favorite wool coat. As you read through these fall wardrobe staples, take stock of what you already have, what might be missing, and what needs replacing in your closet.

12 Fall Wardrobe Staples You Need in Your Closet
Wool Coat
Layering is key this season and one trend you’re going to see around New York this fall is oversized wool coats, like this one from COS.

If you’re in a city where the weather is already getting cool, you’ll be wearing this coat for the next 6 months. It’s one of the most affordable and stylish wool coats that I’ve ever found – and it’s the perfect length for us tall girlies. There’s a reason this coat is always sold out – you better get yours while you can.
Booties
These Hunter booties are a must-have staple for fall.

Made from recycled materials, they’re a classic style and they’re waterproof! This makes them perfect for unpredictable fall weather and the increase in rain that we’re seeing. You might think of rain boots as something only kids wear – but trust me, you want to get a pair of these booties.
Classic Sneaker
If you’ve been needing a new pair of sneakers, I have been loving these OG Sambas from Adidas.

They’re a gender inclusive style which makes them even cooler. I included them in my transitional fall capsule collection and will continue to share them all year long. They’re my new go-to.
Chunky Cashmere Sweater
One of the best things about fall is chunky sweaters.

This pure cashmere sweater is giving Gilmore Girls cozy vibes. I love a chunky sweater with wide open sleeves, it makes styling even easier. Not only is this the softest sweater you’ll ever own – it’s also going to last for years to come.
Leather Trousers
If you only take one thing away from this edit – let it be these gorgeous trousers.

These leather trousers are my favorite thing that I have found for fall. You can style these with a simple white tee, chunky sweater, wool coat, and heeled boots. And yes, they are long enough for us tall girls to style with heels! I’ll be wearing these trousers for the rest of the year.
Wool Scarf
Normally accessories are where I would bring a bit of color into my wardrobe – but this classic wool scarf should hang in every girl’s closet.

It’s stylish and perfect for a capsule wardrobe, where you want a few pieces to make many outfits. COS has been releasing the best fall wardrobe staples. They’re a brand you can trust. This wool scarf will last you for years to come.
Boot Cut Jeans
Denim trends come and go, but one style I’ll never stop wearing is bootcut jeans.

Especially this pair from Favorite Daughter that is actually a good length for us tall girls. I love this wash of denim as well, it’s perfect for the cooler colors and shades of autumn. These jeans will literally go with everything. These jeans go well with everything in this guide.
Leather Biker Jacket
Every girl needs a trusted leather jacket.

If you’ve read any of my guides in the past, you know that I love this particular leather jacket and have been recommending it for years. That means two things – it hasn’t gone out of style, and it’s well-made (this jacket will last for years!)
White Long Sleeve
I’m a big fan of a simple white t-shirt and chances are – you already have one you love in your closet.

But this fall, make sure you have a classic long-sleeve as well. Remember that dressing for fall is all about the layers, so make sure that you have some you love. This white t-shirt is beautifully made, softer than anything else in your closet, and will go with everything in your closet this season.
Knit Dresses
Sweater dresses are so 2004… except maybe not?

There’s only one word to describe this sweater dress: Elegant. It’s riffing on denim with its true-blue tones and it’s shaped to define your form (as opposed to most sweaters that tend to hide your form). I really love this sweater dress, it’s one of the new items in my closet but I know I’ll keep pulling it out all autumn long.
Crossbody Bag
This is the perfect bag for all seasons.

It’s been included in many of my capsule wardrobes this year (that is, after all, the point of capsule wardrobes – to use pieces repeatedly).
I stumbled upon it while shopping for my Quiet Luxury essentials, and it’s been my go-to bag to share ever since. It’s the quality of a luxury handbag for a fraction of the price. It’s stylish and the perfect size to hold all of your daily essentials.
Wide-Brimmed Hat
Let’s mix things up this fall with a gorgeous wool hat.

This might not be the first piece that comes to mind for a fall wardrobe staple… And I don’t think I’ve ever shared a hat in my fall or winter capsule wardrobes before, but this season I love this hat from Brixton. It’s perfect for traveling because it packs away nicely and the color will go with everything.
Accessories are everything when it comes to building a capsule wardrobe. The right accessories can help each outfit look and feel new, even when you’re mixing and matching the same pieces again and again.
